Agriculture can be said as backbone of Pakistan’s economy. 21% of Pakistan GDP depends upon agricultural farms and agro-based products. Punjab is second largest province of Pakistan in terms of land. Punjab consists of 25.9% of Pakistan’s land, out of which 86% is being utilized for the aggregate territory. According to Census of agriculture conducted in 2010, there were almost 5,249,800 agriculture farms in Punjab. As per statistics of 2015, 16.68 million hectares of Punjab area is cropped, wheat was cropped in 42% of the area, cotton is cropped in 14 % of total area and rice is cropped in 11.3 % of total area in Punjab. The agriculture department of Punjab aims at securing the agriculture area from floods and other disasters. It takes necessary measures in improvement of crop production to fulfill the growing need of food in Pakistan. The agriculture department of government of Punjab provides training facilities, research facilities and labs facilities to farmers. This department works under the directions of government of Punjab. Many projects are working for helping and training of farmers in order to increase crop production such as; Pre-Services & In-Services Training, Village Level Farmer's, Training Programmer, Farmer Field Schools (FFS), Production Technology Development, Plant Clinics (Plant wise),Supply of Seed Kits and Monitoring of Inputs. Punjab agricultural research Board is also responsible for Funding Services and Commercialization Services. It is very large network with its own budget and allied departments. Plenty of employment opportunities keep coming in this department.
